How to manage Windows 2008 R2 with Windows Server 2012 RC

We just installed our new Windows Server 2012 RC and the first application opened by the OS is…Server Manager. Great ! It’s time to see how does it works. Very quickly you’ve understand this new server manager will be the console to manage easily all your servers, and for the moment you have one 2012 server for many 2008 servers…so let’s go to add them !

On the Dashboard you have a button to add them. You can find your server in your Active Directory, you DNS or you can import them.

Immediately you will have to face to this error meesage : “Online – Verify WinRM 3.0 service is installed, running, and required firewall ports are open”.

The main reason is the server manager in Windows Server 2012 use Windows Management Framework 3.0. This version must be deploy on your windows Server 2008 r2. To do this :

  • Install and deploy .Net Framwork 4.0 : get it here
  • Install and deploy the WMF 3.0 (you will have to reboot) : get it here

Logon your server 2008 R2 SP1, open a PowerShell as Administrator and type : winrm quickconfig. The system should purpose to create a listener and a firewall rule. Accept the actions

To test the result, go in your Server Manager on the Server 2012, open “all servers”, select the server 2008 R2 SP1 where you’ve deploy WMF 3.0 and do a right click to ask to open a powershell Session in remote.
If it works well you have just to do a refresh and launch a BPA on the server and it will be green and ready to be manage from the new Server Manager 😉

if you have the error : “Online – cannot get performance counter data” you must intall this hotfix KB2682011. You will have to reboot your server.

UPDATE from 03/10/2012 : if you’ve install the Beta version you must update the new one ( or you will have “The WinRM client cannot process the request. Property “StartTimes” with MI type MI_DATETIMEA does not match the expected type from the schema: MI_UINT64A. Specify the correct type and retry the operation.”

UPDATE from 03/10/2012 : and good start point to troubleshoot is this page

  1. Followed your instructions, worked just fine. But please be more specific: “you have just to do a refresh and launch a BPA on the server” – I don’t see where to do this. My Win2008R2 machines show “Online – Data retrieval failures occurred” or “Online – Cannot get event data”

    • hi,

you can fin BPA section here :
      – clic on your server to see his dashboard (events, and infos,…). You will find a section Best Practice Analyzer. On the right of this section the task button. Clic on it and start a BPA.

in your case I m not sure the error is coming from this. Maybe you did not start Performance counter on the Win2008 or maybe your firewall is blocking something.

      • I get the same thing: “Online – Cannot get event data”.

Data retrieval failures occurred happens for me when I have performance monitoring turned on, but haven’t installed KB2682011. Once I install that hotfix, that error goes away and performance monitoring starts working.

I’ve got the firewall turned off, WinRM 3 installed and the appropriate scripts enabling remote management have been run.

The error it throws in the console during refresh is this:

“Events refresh failed with the following error: The WinRM client cannot process the request. Property “StartTimes” with MI type MI_DATETIMEA does not match the expected type from the schema: MI_UINT64A. Specify the correct type and retry the operation.”

This is so new, Google isn’t being much help yet.

  2. Nice instructions. I actually did all this for my Windows 8 Consumer Preview a couple of weeks ago and it all worked fine with RSAT. I had all the connected to the server manager.
Then, I installed Windows 8 Enterprise and found it no longer worked. So I have created a new server 2012, but all servers now are showing “Online – data retrieval failures occurred”. Refresh does not help either. No firewall enabled that I have found. Any idea? Thanks!

    • Just get my copy of windows 8 enterprise today. I will test to manage it on my 2012 preview to see if it works or not. I keep you in touch. If needed I will update my post

  3. Arnaud,

I failed to mention that because I now have no server manager on my Windows 8, I am trying to get the server manager to work on the Server 2012. That is where the “Online – data retrieval failures occurred” appears. Most of the servers there are reporting this error. The ones that are not, I still need to perform the installs and winrm quickconfig.
    Sorry about that, and thanks.

  4. Arnaud,

On September 13th, Microsoft released a version of the 2012 Server Manager that works on my Windows 8 Enterprise, however, I am still working on resolving most of my servers are reporting “Online – Cannot get event data”.

I believe at the Technet site, Microsoft states this is due to a post Hyper-V installation configuration. I do not understand that and have not yet found a solution.

I will share anything else I find.

  5. Anyone able to actually run any of the BPA scans from Windows 8? I only get ‘Start BPA Scan’, and it doesn’t appear to actually DO anything.

    • hi,

you are on a windows 8 and you manage a windows 2012 server or a 2008 server in your manager ? And you try to do a BPA from w8 on a w2012 or w2008 ?

      • Running RSAT on Windows 8 and trying to manage 5 Windows 2008 R2 servers. I did get it to work for one of them yesterday, it seems the same issue with performance counters also affects the BPA results. However, I don’t see any way to launch the SQL 2012 BPA from within the RSAT tool, and that was the whole reason I had actually installed it. The SQL 2012 BPA usually runs under the baseline configuration analyzer, but that doesn’t install on Windows 8. When you try and install the SQL 2012 BPA anyways it says to install the RSAT, which I have done, and subsequently successfully installed the SQL 2012 BPA. I just can’t figure out how to run it…

  6. Hi, i have a problem when I want to install WMF 3.0 I have an error that says the update does not apply to your computer, what can I do?

    Thanks man

  7. Install .NET 4.5.1 and WMF 4.0 on Server 2008 R2 today.
And set WinRM to listen http request, firewall exception by PowerShell.
    It works.

BTW, the server isn’t install .NET 4.0 and WMF 3.0 before. Just get latest updates is fine.

I am wonder how to step by step set WinRM listerer and firewall exception. I check the firewall rules, it seems nothing change…?

  8. I’ve been trying to get this to work on clean installs of 2012 R2 so that non-admins can remotely get info for 2012 R2 RDSH machines in our environment. I came across the MS info on using the Enable-ServerManagerStandardUserRemoting PowerShell command, but this has not resolved the issue. Further digging so far indicates that WinRM is not getting any permissions for the non-admin user. I’m thinking this is why I’m getting Online – Data retrieval failures occurred with the task details complaining of not being able to access info for one or more services or event logs. Seems a little annoying that to make this work I have to make people admins that should not need to be.
